A beautiful epistolary novel filled with history, friendship, bravery, and even a bit of feminism, Hattie Big Sky is a novel you shouldn’t miss. Unfortunately, when she arrives Hattie realizes homesteading isn’t what she expected it to be. When she receives a letter from her Uncle Charlie’s lawyer saying he left his homestead claim in Vida, Montana to his niece, Hattie jumps at the chance to drop her nickname Hattie Here-and-There. She has been shuttled between relatives repeatedly since her parents died when she was a toddler. It’s 1918 and sixteen-year-old Hattie Inez Brooks is tired of feeling out of place. But Hattie Big Sky might be one of my all-time favorite young adult novels. I wasn’t a big fan of The Higher Power of Lucky, which won the 2007 Newbery Award. Not only because I feel like this is an underrated book, but because it is a 2007 Newbery Honor book. I find it practically impossible to articulate the passion I feel for 5-star and the rare 6-star book! But I had to try with Hattie Big Sky. I don’t often write reviews for books I love. ![]()
